The French Alps have long been a favourite destination for skiers looking for a luxury France ski holiday and with a fine choice of exclusive hotels and sumptuous private chalets, combined with excellent ski opportunities and facilities along with stylish in-resort boutiques it isn’t hard to see why.
Unlike Austria and Switzerland, where skiing evolved gradually from mountain villages, France didn’t build many of its most famous resorts (such as Les Arcs, La Plagne and Avoriaz) until the 1960s, so it was possible to select the highest, most snow-sure places to ski in France.
On a luxury skiing holiday to France, you can choose from a number of options
whether you like your skiing to come with plenty of scope and accessibility such as those of Les Trois Valees, the world’s largest skiing area, and L’ Espace Killy or you prefer the more varied terrain of places like Chamonix and Megeve, you’ll not be disappointed.
The laid-back continental atmosphere certainly adds to the appeal and in true French style the appreciation of fine cuisine and leisurely lunches play an important part of any visit to the region.
The three huge resort complexes are Les Trois Vallees, Paradiski and Les Portes du Soleil, each of which is far larger than any US resort and easily offers a week’s worth of great skiing. The first two are both located in southwestern France, on the Italian border, about a three hour drive from Geneva, the closest airport. They are outside Albertville, host of the 1992 Winter Olympic Games, and both held events.
There is a fantastic range of walking and climbing paths to discover and just in case you thought there was time to get bored, a wide range of more adrenalin fuelled activities from paragliding to rafting to the exhilarating mountain boarding.
By far the biggest foreign market for these resorts is the UK, and most come on package trips that include transfers, most meals, rentals, lodging and lift tickets, and there are any number of UK-based tour operators offering substantial discounts. In the US, the biggest player is Ski.com, and they are very good, but in France they mainly service the more luxurious resorts, including the four high end ones in Les Trois Vallees.
They do cover Morzine, part of Les Portes du Soleil and an excellent choice, but not Paradiski.
Paradiski connected by the world’s largest ski cable car
This complex is almost entirely comprised of two huge resorts, Les Arcs and La Plagne, connected by the world’s largest ski cable car, a two-level tram that spans the valley in just 4-minutes. You can stay at either and easily ski both. La Plagne is family oriented, with a lot of wider runs and more terrain for beginners and intermediates, while Les Arcs is considered more challenging with narrower runs and more expert terrain, but both are so big that these generalizations are just that, general, and there is plenty of skiing for every level, including quite expert, at both. It may be family friendly, but Red Bull holds its unique Linecatcher free skiing extreme competition, the only one of its kind in the word, at La Plagne.
La Plagne has ten ski-in/out villages across its expanse of slopes, with some 50,000 beds in every kind of lodging, except top tier luxury, including rental condos, small hotels, large hotels, chalets and family run lodges. There is even a self-contained, all-inclusive Club Med. Each village has a different feel with Plagne Centre being the largest and most bustling and Belle Plagne in my mind the most attractive.
